The basics

Law 1    The Ground

The pitch must be a maximum width of 70 metres; and a maximum length of 100 metres plus the two in-goal areas at each end, which themselves cannot exceed 22 metres long.

The goal posts should be centred on each goal line and must be 5.60 metres apart. The cross bar must be 3.00 metres above ground on its top edge.

The touch flags must be at least 1.20 metres high.

Law 2    The Ball

The ball when new shall be oval in shape, of four panels, and of the following dimensions:-

 Length in line                    280 - 300mm

Circumference (end on)    760 - 790mm

bullet

 Circumference (in width)  580 - 620mm

 Weight                               400 - 440 grams

bullet

It should have an air pressure of 0.67 - 0.70 kgs/cm2 (9.5 - 10 psi) at start of play.

 Law 3    Number of Players

Each team consists of 15 players plus an agreed number of replacements and/or substitutes. A replacement replaces a player due to injury: a substitute replaces a team mate for tactical reasons. Teams with 16-18 squads must have 4 players capable of front row play: teams with 19-22 must have 5.

Law 4     Clothing
bulletAny items of headgear, shoulder pads and chest pads must bear the authorised mark of the IRB from 1st October 2000 to confirm they comply with this Law. Boot studs must comply with BS6366 and show Kitemark to this effect. No communication devices are to be worn.
