The Federation was formed in 1895 as the Yorkshire Referees' Society and is a sub committee of the YRFU Constituent Body. Five Societies constitute the Federation. The Federation and Societies cover all of Yorkshire .
The Fedration and Societies provide referees for games up to Level 5 (e.g. North Division One). Appointments at Levels 5 and 6, although Society Referees, are usually done by the North Group or the Federation. Referees at Level 7 and above usually find themselves out "on exchange" refereeing in different divisions or areas. This is partly so that they gain wider experience and partly because there are only a handful of clubs in the North that have teams at that level. The Society provides referees to Yorkshire Clubs, Schools and Universities.
This Federation is part of the North Group, one of four National Groups, which equate roughly to the four RFU Divisions for Club Rugby (North/Midlands/South East/South West) (see English Leagues)
